Matching Struggling Readers to Books that Fit

In 2007, LEF was awarded the Capital One Bank Education Initiative Grant. Originally authored by LPPS reading instructor, Kelly Gonzales, this grant is designed to increase the percentage of students reading on or above grade level by third grade.

    Project Goals:
The project provides research-based practice reading books which are leveled according to student ability. The beauty of this project is that it provides a much-needed, daily practice book on each student's independent reading level. This way each student can gradually progress at his or her own pace, which compliments classroom small group instruction. These books are being used in group instruction, tutoring and for reading at home.

    Project Impact:
Over 120,000 leveled practice books have been accessible to over 8,000 students in Lafayette Parish Public Schools.

First year reading test results report and 8% - 30% increase in the number of students reading on level.

Reading Test Data will be reported and studied for a total of three consecutive years.

In addition to Capital One Bank, other community partners in the project are JPMorgan Chase, ConocoPhillips, Junior League of Lafayette, Rotary Club and Women's Foundation.
