    Leader in Me

The Leader in Me process helps develop the essential life skills and characteristics students need in order to thrive in the 21st century. The Leader in Me is integrated into a school's core curriculum and everyday language so that it isn't "one more thing" teachers and administrators have to do. It becomes part of the culture, gaining momentum and producing improved results year after year, benefiting schools and students in the following ways:

    • Develops students who have the skills and self-confidence to succeed as leaders in the 21st century.
    • Decreases discipline referrals.
    • Teaches and develops character and leadership through existing core curriculum.
    • Improves academic achievement.
    • Raises levels of accountability and engagement among both parents and staff.

The Leader in Me process also helps to create a common language within a school, built on proven principle-based Covey's leadership skills found in Dr. Stephen R. Covey’s best-selling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People:

    • Habit 1: Be Proactive® • You're in Charge
    • Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind® • Have a Plan
    • Habit 3: Put First Things First® • Work First, Then Play
    • Habit 4: Think Win-Win® • Everyone Can Win
    • Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood® • Listen Before You Talk
    • Habit 6: Synergize® • Together Is Better
    • Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw® • Balance Feels Best

LEF believes in this innovation movement, that is why we have awarded Plantation Elementary funding to begin this process in the fall of 2010.

    Bye, Bye, Bully

Authored by Margaret Sikes, L. J. Alleman Middle School

The goal of this program is to turn negative interactions with peers into positive interactions by incorporating such virtues as patience, self-discipline, respect, consideration, responsibility and honesty into the students' daily lives.  The program utilizes the Virtues Project to provide "life-skill" strategies which make the knowledge and practice of virtues accessible to people of all cultures.  As a result of the program students who feel more accepted among peers, are more open to the education process, and more motivated to stay in school.

This project has been effective in reducing discipline problems and incidences of bullying behavior, both which have had a negative impact on elementary and middle school campuses.  Research from the 2009 Education Trust National Convention confirms that providing a positive and accepting environment is one of the most important conditions for learning.  In successful schools across the nation where improvement in the social climate was the single change, major gains were realized in student achievement, thus reducing the achievement gap.

As a Model Grant, LEF will provide funding for the virtues training and supplies to implement the project in elementary and middle school classrooms. This project can be successfully implemented on a classroom basis and does not have to be school wide.  However, the more classrooms participating, the better the entire school climate will be.

If you are interested in applying for this grant for your classroom or becoming a grant funding partner for this model grant, please contact LEF Associate Director, Amber Harper, at 234-3229.
